Exploring the Impact of AI: Insights from Web Summit in Lisbon
Web Summit in Lisbon, a big tech conference, is all about artificial intelligence (AI). It’s the main topic, both on and off the stage, covering things like job displacement and regulations.
Experts from various fields worldwide discussed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market, creators, and the best ways for governments to regulate this technology.
We interviewed four tech experts to get their insights on the most significant impact AI will have on society in the next year.
Andrew Sullivan – chief executive officer & president, Internet Society
“The most significant impact might not be how AI directly influences society, but how our response to AI shapes us. ‘AI’ covers various techniques, some old and some new.
We’re creating laws and regulations to address different aspects of this sometimes immature technology, often driven by fear. Crafting rules based on fear can be risky.”
Ramesh Srinivasan – professor of information studies, University of California, Los Angeles
“Throughout the year, we’ve noticed many companies investing in AI, and I believe it’s connected to a bigger story: cutting a large number of jobs. The aim is for these corporations to make money from AI systems by replacing and reducing costs for various types of work.
This trend was evident in the Writers’ Guild strike, especially concerning large language models. My main worry is how this contributes to existing problems like economic insecurity, instability, and inequality.
It’s crucial to find solutions now – if not now, then when? – that ensure these systems benefit everyone.
However, the excitement around the technology often prevents us from openly questioning what it is and how these systems actually work.”
Bryan Talebi – chief executive officer, Ahura AI
“In the coming year, the most substantial influence of AI on society will be in the corporate world. AI tools such as Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), personalisation tools, and digital twins are significantly boosting worker productivity by tenfold.
This surge in productivity may lead to reduced hiring and staff numbers, prompting many companies to lay off a substantial portion of their workforce, often attributing these layoffs to broader economic factors.
Furthermore, learning personalisation tools like Ahura AI and others will empower individuals to quickly acquire new skills and adapt to evolving job requirements.”
Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner – co-founder of Vivaldi Technologies
“The use of AI hinges on how you apply the technology. While there are intriguing experiments in certain areas, there’s also the potential for a lot of harm.
AI, much like big data, often operates as a popularity contest. Whatever is recognised as a pattern tends to become an answer to questions, though not necessarily the right one.
I’m worried about the leading companies in this field, given their questionable track record regarding user data and their priorities.
On a positive note, many startups are exploring unique approaches and building useful things, such as aiding in cancer research.
In the realm of browsers, there are interesting applications of AI for voice recognition and command generation. I see both the potential and the risk, especially when it comes to collecting more data.”
