A Chinese electric car maker is following Tesla’s lead by introducing its first human-like robot.

At its 2024 AI Day event, XPENG introduced its first robot, called Iron, marking an exciting move into robotics.

Iron features over 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom, using advanced technology from XPENG’s AI electric vehicles (EVs).

XPENG shared that Iron is already working on its production lines, helping to build the upcoming P7+ EV.

“The robots are now part of XPENG’s daily operations, focusing on tasks in factories and stores,” the company stated.

Adaptable System

At its 2024 AI Day, XPENG, a leader in EVs, showcased its latest AI advancements, including the humanoid robot named Iron.

Standing 5’8″ and weighing 154 pounds, Iron is already in action on XPENG’s production lines, helping assemble the new P7+ electric vehicle, showing its functional role beyond just tech display.

Powered by XPENG’s custom Turing AI chip, Iron features over 60 joints and 200 degrees of movement, enabling it to handle delicate tasks and perform complex actions like walking.

Iron’s intelligence relies on the powerful Turing AI chip, featuring a 40-core CPU designed for demanding the AI tasks across robots, cars, and even the future flying vehicles.

XPENG states that the Turing chip can handle AI models with 30 billion parameters, completing over 2,700 functional tests in 40 days—three times faster than the industry standard.

This capability allows Iron to adapt to various tasks with flexibility and human-like decision-making skills.

Pursuing Global Presence

XPENG’s ambitions extend beyond factory use; the company envisions Iron as personal assistant capable of handling tasks in offices & even homes.

This broad vision puts XPENG in competition with major tech players like Tesla, whose Optimus robot also uses similar autonomous technology.

Some have noted design similarities between Iron and other robots, sparking industry critique. In addition, XPENG introduced the Kunang super-electric system—a high-efficiency designed to increase EV range by optimising energy conversion.

Built on an 800V silicon carbide platform, it combines an ultra-fast 5C AI battery with hybrid silicon carbide drive, enhancing both performance & reliability.

XPENG’s Kunpeng system features an ultra-quiet range extender, producing noise as low as 1 dB, and uses AI for seamless transitions between electric and extended-range driving.

With rapid-charging capabilities, Kunpeng adds 1 km (0.62 miles) of range per second, reaching 80% charge in just 12 minutes, while XPENG’s S5 liquid-cooled charging station delivers similar speeds.

An AI Battery Doctor actively monitors each battery, boosting health and extending lifespan by up to 30%. XPENG is also exploring flying cars, planning hybrid models for 2026.

With a focus on AI, robotics, and autonomous tech, XPENG aims to expand globally, targeting 60 countries by next year as it moves beyond EVs.
