Superabundance Unbound: Limitless Possibilities in a Finite World

From reduced mortality rates to increased resource abundance, our journey toward superabundance challenges old narratives. This progress thrives on freedom, allowing individuals to think, exchange ideas, and innovate. To sustain this trajectory, we must adopt an “abundance mindset,” celebrating the power of human ingenuity, welcoming new life as architects of our future, and promoting the free exchange of ideas to build a more prosperous world.

“Innovation has improved our productivity and raised our standards of living beyond anything that our ancestors dared to dream about… Humans, far from being a cancer on the planet, are intrinsically valuable.” Marian Tupy

The world has long grappled with concerns over resource scarcity and population growth. From the days of Thomas Malthus in the 1800s to contemporary debates, the specter of overpopulation and dwindling resources has haunted our collective consciousness.

However, as we reflect on the last two centuries of human history, a remarkable and optimistic narrative emerges – one that challenges these age-old fears and paints a picture of superabundance in a finite world.

The Rise of Abundance

Contrary to the doomsday prophecies, the trajectory of human progress has been marked by remarkable achievements. Over the past two centuries, we have witnessed a significant improvement in various aspects of human life.

Mortality rates have dropped, nutrition has improved, and global income levels have risen. But perhaps most strikingly, we have seen an exponential growth in resource abundance.

From 1980 to 2022, the world’s population surged from 4.4 billion to 8 billion, nearly doubling in size. Astonishingly, total resource abundance increased by a staggering 420.1% during the same period.

This surge in resource availability translated into a tangible improvement in living standards, with basic commodities becoming 65.5% more affordable per hours worked. Instead of resources becoming scarcer with a growing population, innovation and productivity have allowed us to create more for everyone.

The Foundation of Freedom

This remarkable journey towards abundance is underpinned by a crucial factor – human creativity and innovation. Every leap in abundance can be attributed to human ingenuity. However, for innovation to thrive, we need an environment that fosters it – an environment characterised by freedom.

Western societies have been at the forefront of embracing such freedoms. They have nurtured an environment where individuals are free to think, exchange ideas, experiment, trade, and cooperate. These liberal institutions have empowered their citizens to unleash their innovative potential.

It is imperative that these fundamental freedoms are protected to sustain this progress and enable individuals to continue driving solutions to the world’s challenges.

The 'Abundance Mindset'

While we have made significant strides in solving resource-related issues, there is still much work to be done. The rise in forest coverage in the West, the rejuvenation of fish reserves through innovative aquaculture methods, and the restoration of nitrogen levels in our soil through advanced crop modifications are all testaments to human ingenuity. These solutions have the potential to propel us toward even greater abundance.

However, to maintain this momentum, the West and the world at large must adopt an “abundance mindset.” This mindset recognises that human innovation, grounded in freedom, is the driving force behind progress.

It celebrates the potential of each new life as a contributor to our future abundance, rather than fearing overpopulation. It encourages the free exchange of ideas as we collectively seek a more prosperous future. It reflects on the lessons of the past and applies them to chart a path forward.

The history of the last two centuries challenges the pessimistic notions of resource scarcity and overpopulation. Instead, it illustrates the incredible potential of human creativity and innovation to usher in an era of superabundance.

By safeguarding the freedoms that enable innovation and embracing an “abundance mindset,” we can continue on this path of progress, ultimately proving that humans are not a cancer on the planet but intrinsically valuable architects of a brighter future.
