Optimal online scrolling: A potential defense against Dementia
A recent survey suggests that using the internet regularly might be connected to keeping your brain healthy as you get older.
There have been lots of studies looking at how spending time on the internet can be bad for your brain. But here’s some new information that suggests the internet might actually be good for your brain, especially as you get older. A team of researchers from NYU found that using the internet regularly could reduce the chances of getting dementia when you’re older.
They studied the internet habits of more than 18,000 adults who were 50 years old or older for up to 17 years, with an average of almost 8 years. They looked at data from government’s Health and Retirement Study, which happens every two years.
They divided the people into two groups: those who used the internet regularly and those who didn’t. At the beginning of the study, they also checked how well these people’s brains were working.
The results showed that the people who used the internet regularly had about half the risk of getting dementia compared to those who didn’t use it much, even when they considered other health problems. The researchers also found that people who continued using the internet had even lower chances of having problems with their memory and thinking skills.
But before you start spending all your time on the internet, there’s a catch. When the researchers looked at a smaller group of people who provided information about how many hours they spent online each week, they found something interesting.
It seemed like there’s a “U-curve” situation when it comes to the risk of dementia and internet use. In other words, people who spent more than six hours a day on the internet had a slightly higher chance of having problems with their memory and thinking skills, similar to those who hardly used the internet at all.
This led the researchers to think that too much time online might not be good for older adults’ brains.So, while this study has some interesting findings about the benefits of internet use, it’s not a green light to go online excessively.
It’s still important to use the internet in moderation, especially since spending too much time online could have negative effects on your cognitive health.
The idea that using the internet in moderation is good for your brain fits nicely with what experts have been saying about keeping your mind healthy. They recommend leading a generally healthy lifestyle, which means getting regular exercise, eating mostly plant-based foods, avoiding unproven supplements, taking care of any existing health issues, and cutting back on alcohol.
So, in addition to all those things, you can potentially add about an hour of daily internet use to the list of things that might help your brain. Just be careful not to get too carried away and spend all day online.
