NASA’s Artemis III astronauts will wear very stylish spacesuits when they walk on the Moon. A company called Axiom Space is working with the famous fashion brand Prada to design these spacesuits for a mission in 2025.

Prada’s engineers will help Axiom improve their spacesuits. They will come up with materials and design ideas to keep astronauts safe in space and on the Moon. Axiom’s CEO, Michael Suffredini, said that Prada’s expertise in making things, creative designs, and special materials will make sure that astronauts are comfortable on the Moon.

They will also consider how astronauts feel and move in the spacesuits, which is something older spacesuits didn’t think about.

In March, NASA showed an early version of the AxEMU spacesuit. They made sure it fits well for almost all American men and women. This is important because the Artemis mission plans to send the first woman to the Moon. It’s important for the safety and comfort of astronauts.

Prada’s Group Marketing Director, Lorenzo Bertelli, mentioned that Prada has many years of experience in designing and engineering technology. While Prada is famous for fancy clothes, they  have experience in making advanced things like Luna Rossa racing yachts.

“We feel very proud to be a part of this important mission alongside Axiom Space,” they said. “It’s a real celebration of how human creativity and innovation can help our civilization progress.”

Even though Prada is known for fancy fashion, the final design of the AxEMU spacesuit will focus on safety and practicality, not just looking stylish. Astronauts need protection from things like the Sun’s radiation and the lack of air on the Moon.

They also need enough oxygen and space for HD cameras to send live videos to Earth. Earlier this year, the BBC mentioned that each suit will use 3D printing and laser cutting to make sure it fits each astronaut perfectly.

In March, NASA showed images of the AxEMU in black and gray with blue and orange touches. But now, Axiom Space is hinting that the suits might be off-white, like the ones worn during the Apollo moon missions.

We’ll probably get more detailed looks at the spacesuits in the coming months as the Artemis Program keeps moving toward its goal of going back to the Moon.
