A Japanese startup, led by 25-year-old inventor Ryo Yoshida, is offering five special robot suits that can transform into vehicles. These suits are really big, almost 15 feet tall, and weigh about as much as three small cars. You can pre-order one from Tsubame Industries, and it’s called the ‘Archax.’ But it’s pretty expensive, costing £2.5 million.

This exciting news was shared by Reuters on Monday. They talked to Yoshida about why they made this super cool robot suit, which is named after a dinosaur with wings called archaeopteryx.

At that time, he said, ‘Japan is really good at making animations, games, robots, and cars. So, I thought it would be amazing if I could create a product that combines all these things into one. I wanted to make something that represents Japan.’

To operate the Archax, which has a strong frame made of steel and iron, people need to climb a small ladder and get into a cockpit located in the robot’s chest. Once inside, there are nine cameras connected to four screens that show what’s happening around the robot.

It also displays information like how much battery is left, how fast it’s going, how much it’s tilted, and where it’s positioned. Depending on what the person wants, the Archax can move at speeds of up to 6 mph in two different modes.

In one mode, it stands on four wheels like a robot, and in the other, it becomes a sleek vehicle, with the cockpit reclining 17 degrees while the seat stays upright. There are joysticks & pedals on the floor to control how the robot moves, as well as its arms & hands.

However, unlike many other robots out there, the Archax isn’t currently built for heavy-duty real-world tasks. Right now, it’s all about being, as the company puts it, “cool.”

But that doesn’t mean Ryo Yoshida and his team at Tsubame don’t have hopes for future Archax models that could be more practical. According to the inventor, he envisions these piloted robot suits being used for things like search-and-rescue missions, helping in disasters, and even in space-related work. But for the moment, Tsubame seems quite content with its status as a high-end toy.

The product’s description emphasises, “Arcax is not just a big robot that you can ride inside. A person can climb into the cockpit and control the vehicle at will. Each part moves with sufficient speed, strength, and power.”

And just to drive the point home, Tsubame Industries adds, “And it’s cool.”
