Scientist States Human Consciousness Comes from Another Dimension
A scientist has claimed that human consciousness originates from another dimension, challenging conventional understanding

A new and surprising theory says that human consciousness may come from hidden dimensions, not just from brain activity.
A physicist has claimed that when we create art, practice science, think about philosophy, or dream, we connect to invisible parts of the universe.
He believes this could explain the mystery of human consciousness that has puzzled scientists for centuries. Michael Pravica, a physics professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, supports this idea with the concept of hyperdimensionality.
This suggests that the universe has more dimensions than just the four we know: height, length, width, and time.
However, his theory is controversial. One scientist even said that the foundation of Pravica’s theory “borders on science fiction.”
Pravica told, “The sheer fact that we can conceive of higher dimensions than four within our mind, within our mathematics, is a gift… it’s something that transcends biology.”
For centuries, scientists are trying to understand human consciousness and where it comes from, with many different theories being proposed.

One popular theory suggests that consciousness is linked to how much information is shared between different parts of the brain.
The more the brain connects and integrates information, the more conscious a being is thought to be.
Another theory argues that conscious mental states are controlled by top-down signaling in the brain. This means higher-level brain regions send information, expectations, or context to lower-level areas of the brain.
However, Pravica’s theory goes beyond neuroscience and dives into theoretical physics.
He believes that in moments of deep awareness, such as during dreaming or engaging in highly creative or intellectual activities, our consciousness may move beyond the physical dimension and enter a higher plane.
According to Pravica, during these times, our consciousness aligns with hidden dimensions and experiences a surge of inspiration.
To understand this controversial theory, imagine you’re a two-dimensional being living in a two-dimensional world, like a character in a comic book. Now, picture a sphere passing through your view.
From your perspective, the sphere would appear as a dot that grows into a larger circle as it gets closer, then shrinks until it disappears. You wouldn’t be able to recognise it as a three-dimensional object.
Pravica suggests that we are similar to these 2D beings. Although we live in a four-dimensional world, we can only perceive matter and energy within those four dimensions, just like how beings in 2D world can’t perceive 3D object.
This limitation means we’re unable to detect higher dimensions that might exist all around us.
This idea forms the basis of hyperdimensionality—the belief that the universe is made up of many dimensions, some of which are hidden because they’re beyond our physical reach.
Hyperdimensionality is linked to string theory, which proposes that reality is made up of tiny, vibrating strings that are smaller than atoms, electrons, or quarks.
As these strings vibrate, twist, and fold, they affect multiple unseen dimensions, creating the particles and forces we observe, including gravity and other fundamental forces.
“String is essentially theory of hyperdimensionality,” Pravica explained. “It’s looking at how the universe is put together on a sub-quantum scale.”

Although we can observe the effects of the tiny vibrating strings on the physics of our dimension, we can’t physically see the hidden dimensions they vibrate in. But Pravica believes our consciousness might be able to tap into these dimensions.
While hyperdimensionality and string theory are widely accepted by physicists, Pravica’s connection of these ideas to consciousness is more controversial. His theory blurs the lines between science and spirituality.
Pravica, an Orthodox Christian with a Ph.D. from Harvard, sees hyperdimensionality as a way to connect his scientific background with his religious beliefs. For instance, he suggests that Jesus could have been a hyperdimensional being.
“According to the Bible, Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after being on Earth. How do you ascend into heaven if you’re a four-dimensional creature?”
Pravica asked. He theorises that being hyperdimensional might have allowed Jesus to move between our world and heaven, which could be a realm of higher or infinite dimensions.
Pravica’s theory is rooted in a “God of the gaps” perspective, where scientific mysteries are explained through divine intervention, according to Stephen Holler, a physics professor at Fordham University.
Holler believes this approach limits scientific progress and stifles the curiosity needed to understand complex phenomena like human consciousness.
He argues that just because we can mathematically manipulate higher dimensions doesn’t mean they truly exist or that our consciousness can interact with them.
Furthermore, exploring these higher dimensions is impossible with current technology. Even the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, cannot provide proof of these dimensions.
The LHC accelerates particles to near speed of light, allowing physicists to study incredibly small dimensions, even smaller than a proton.
But even the LHC can’t reveal the high-dimensional strings that quantum physics predicts. To do so, scientists would need more powerful collider.
Without concrete evidence, Holler says hyperdimensionality “borders on science fiction.”
Despite this, Pravica is hopeful that more advanced technology could exist in his children’s lifetime. Until then, he remains committed to supporting hyperdimensionality and his theory on its connection to consciousness.
“I see no point otherwise,” he said. “Why study? Why live?”
